If you get sick with COVID‑19, your grandchild would miss your “bravo!” cheers.
COVID-19 remains a risk—especially for certain populations1
COVID-19 is a respiratory disease that continues to pose a risk to everyone in Australia, and immunity derived from previous infections or vaccinations may not be as strong in fighting the latest versions of the virus.
Signs & symptoms of COVID-19
COVID-19 often begins with mild symptoms that feel like a cold or the flu. These can start 2 to 14 days after virus exposure. Symptoms usually develop in stages instead of happening all at once. For most people, COVID-19 is a mild to moderate disease. For others, particularly older adults or those with weakened immune systems, a COVID-19 infection can progress to a more serious and even life-threatening condition.
Anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 can pass the virus onto others. Whilst isolation is no longer a legal requirement, if you test positive for COVID-19, staying at home helps protect the people in your community.
Help protect yourself against COVID-19
Consult your healthcare professional about your risk of severe COVID-19, prevention options, and any symptoms you may be experiencing.
Severe COVID-19: What puts you at risk? 1
Although COVID-19 can cause severe illness in people of any age, the risk is higher for older adults. Age is the primary risk factor, particularly for those who are 75 or older. Adults with severe immunocompromising conditions or who have certain pre-existing medical conditions, including the examples listed below, are also at increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease.
